Detroit Pistons is a pro basketball team based in the peripheries of Detroit , Michigan . It was founded in 1941 in the city Fort Wayne , Indiana by Fred Zollner and was named after the Zollner Machine Company (Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons). The following year the club joined National Basketball League. In 1948 the club became Fort Wayne Pistons and also became a franchise holder of National Basketball Association. The Pistons are one of the oldest franchises of the NBA.

 
 

The club in its formative years was anchored by guard Bobby McDermott, guard Andy Phillip and center Larry Foust. In 1955 and 1956, the club managed to reach the NBA finals but encountered defeat both the times from Syracuse and Philadelphia Warriors respectively. In 1957, Zollner took the team to Detroit . The Pistons continued to qualify for the playoffs each year until 1964. Their new list featured guard Gene Shue, forward Bailey Howell, and forward Dave DeBusschere, who came aboard in 1962. The newly formed team played its first four seasons in the Olympia Stadium but faced discrepancy. The team continuously struggled on the field and the box office to retain itself. Guard Dave Bing remained dominant in the team from late 60's to early 70's. He won the rookie of the year award in the 1966-67 season also became one of the league's top scorers. In 1974, the proprietorship of the team went in the hands of Bill Davidson. Even the teams' leading scorer Dave Bing was traded. Davidson shifted the team to the Pontiac Silverdome in 1978. There the team played in Silverdome arena. But even the manipulations failed to improve the luck of the team.

 
 
With the acquisition of point guard Isiah Thomas, center Bill Laimbeer, guard Vinnie Johnson, Joe Dumars, Rick Mahorn, and Dennis Rodman in the early 80's, the team reached to the summit of the league. Under the guidance of coach Chuck Daly, the club won two NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. Before the commencement of the 1988-89 season, the team moved to The Palace of Auburn Hills, their new home stadium. They even reinforced their list by procuring forward Mark Aguirre. Under the authoritative leadership of Dumars, the Pistons restructured their club. They are currently coached by Hall of Fame inductee Larry Brown. The stars of the club are Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, Richard "Rip" Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace. The Pistons play in red, white and blue colored jersey. Their logo has a basketball with “PISTONS” superimposed upon it. a ssociation.
